With the current excitement surrounding the immunotherapy (IO) of cancer, there is intense interest in finding the best combination treatment modalities to enhance the anti-tumour immune response. This includes testing of radiotherapy (RT)/IO combinations, both pre-clinically and clinically, although the mechanistic basis of how and why RT/IO can synergise remains incompletely understood. This session will focus on how and where RT can turn immunologically ‘cold’ tumours ‘hot’, thus priming for more effective IO. Areas of the relevant science and clinical application will be covered, including current activity in trial development, particularly in lung cancer.
