Research funding for end of life care past and present – are we doing enough?
Speaker: Dr Sabine Best, Head of Research, Marie Curie
This session will introduce listeners to the different types of research that are covered under the umbrella term of end of life care research. This includes a wide range of studies, from identifying the need for end of life care in different patient groups to clinical research testing drugs for better symptom control or complex interventions to improve the quality of life of patients, carers and families. It will also show the results of an analysis of the NCRI Cancer Research Database to present figures on overall cancer-related end of life care research spend in the UK between 2002 and 2017. This will include an analysis of what cancer types are most investigated in this context. A preliminary analysis of data from the International Cancer Research Partnership (ICRP) database will give some international context. Lastly, some examples of the impact end of life care research can have on patients living with terminal illness and their carers, families and friends will be presented.
