Does it work? A beginners guide to clinical trials

6:40 pm-7:25 pm

Room: Boisdale

Programme stream(s): Cancer discovery / underpinning research , General , Treatment

Speaker: Martin Christlieb, University of Oxford

All this week you hear amazing stories of science. Some of this science would have been impossible, even a short time ago. But cancer research is science in the service of a human problem, so however amazing the story, the important question is: does it work? When faced with real patients in the clinic, does the science give a measurable clinical benefit.

In this session we will explore some of the basic principles involved in asking a sensitive, useful, unbiased question about how effective a new idea is. Throughout the session we will assume no prior knowledge and we will speak plain English. Questions will be encouraged and we hope this will be useful for consumers and others looking to understand the trial process.
