The NCRI Conference and Events Team works closely with the NCRI Consumer Forum to ensure that patients and carers are included in the development of the programme of the NCRI Cancer Conference and that their views are taken into account as people living with, or caring for someone with cancer. We have received the ‘Patients Included’ status to show our commitment to patients and carers. An accredited Patients Included conference must successfully meet five criteria. The criteria and how we meet each one are listed below:
1. Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference’s central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.
The NCRI involves patients or carers with experience of cancer in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers. The 2019 NCRI Cancer Conference programme was developed in collaboration with a patient representative from the NCRI Consumer Forum who took part in our Scientific Committee meetings.
2. Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.
The NCRI offers 40 bursary places to NCRI Consumer Forum patients/carers to attend the Conference. Patient experts who did not secure a bursary are welcome to attend and are offered a subsidised rate (category E2). Patient experts formally involved in cancer research are encouraged to submit their findings on the abstract submission page to be considered for presentation. Patients and carers also feature as invited speakers in a number of sessions.
3. Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or carers participating in the advertised programme are paid in full, in advance. Scholarships are provided by the conference organisers to allow patients or carers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates.
Travel, accommodation and free attendance are offered to 40 patients/carers formally involved in NCRI activities. Fees are covered in full and in advance of the event as required. More information on the bursary application process is available from our Research Involvement Officer: Liane Hazell
4. The disability requirements of participants are accommodated. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other programme elements are open to patient delegates.
The venues selected to host the NCRI Cancer Conference are fully accessible and can accommodate the disability requirements of all participants. All relevant sessions, breakouts, social events and the exhibition area are open to patient experts.
5. Access for virtual participants is facilitated with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.
The NCRI facilitate access for virtual participants by recording videos and by sharing news through our social media channels.
